Presidents Message

Presedent, Dr. Durr - e - Sabih

Dear Members,
We have, by the Grace of God, achieved several very important milestones during the term of the present executive council. You already know of a few of the achievements but there are several activities that will yield results only later but we have set the "ball rolling" as they say.
The most important achievement of the society is the successful publication of the journal. With the second issue now out, the quality and substance of the contents has improved and the editorial team is already looking at the third issue. I hope the PSNM will be able to sustain and consolidate this activity and complete the next steps, i.e. recognition by the local medical council and incorporation into PubMed.
As I write this note, preparations are in the final stages for holding the International Nuclear Medicine Conference, again, from 20th -22nd April 2012. After the unfortunate postponement of the conference last year, we could have rested on our laurels and considered the conference done and on our credit, but this EC remains committed providing its members with as many opportunities of professional sharing as possible and the conference is being held again. Among the many other "firsts" we have the resource directory, the workshop at the beginning of the term and the newsletter. PSNM recently held a joint seminar with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in Lahore. The society contributed materially as well as in human resources for holding this seminar.
I think is it appropriate to share some of the efforts we have made that will bear fruit in the long term. Many members of the society are of the view that the present MSc Nuclear Medicine programme, from which almost all nuclear medicine physicians of the country have very proudly graduated, needs strengthening. The need is especially relevant in the light of the new technological advances in nuclear medicine and the greater integration of cross-sectional imaging into daily nuclear medicine practice. With this in mind a letter was written to the Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission recommending changes in the scope and length of training in Nuclear Medicine, I am happy to report that the Chairman has constituted a committee to come up with recommendations on how to go about doing this.
Recognizing the importance of having appropriately trained technologists, a letter was written to the Pakistan Nuclear Regularity Authority offering, from the society′s platform, a skills assessment test to certify competence in nuclear medicine technology. The PNRA has included this proposal into their annual council meeting and we are hopeful of an encouraging outcome later this year. The society has also continued its interaction with the PNRA on several other levels, and for the first time, PNRA will be one of the sponsors for the upcoming nuclear medicine conference. We hope that this will provide an opportunity for the nuclear medicine community to discuss and solve any licensing issues that might exist. The nuclear medicine community and the PNRA must evolve a partnership instead of any adversarial position and I am hopeful that this conference will pave the way for a supportive relationship in the future. Internationally, your society has made its mark in Asia and The President has been selected as a member of the executive committee of the ARCCNM (Asian Regional Cooperative Council for Nuclear Medicine); a proposal by the President PSNM for starting an Asian Board in Nuclear Medicine has been approved unanimously by the ARCCNM-ASNM joint meeting held in Vietnam recently. Details of this proposal appear in the current issue of PJNM. We are also negotiating with the Australian Nuclear Medicine Society for more collaboration.

I look forward to seeing the PSNM move from strength to strength in the future. Yours truly,
Durr-e-Sabih
